The 5 Best Moments From The 1st Episode Of Ohio State Football’s “Scarlet & Gray Days”

first_imgPromotion for Ohio State's scarlet and gray days.Twitter/@BigTenNetworkThe first episode of Big Ten Network’s Hard Knocks-style documentary series about Ohio State football, Scarlet & Gray Days, premiered tonight, and it promises to be an incredibly fun look inside the defending national champions as we head towards the season. The episode highlighted a few players, including quarterback Cardale Jones, QB-turned-receiver and h-back Braxton Miller, and linebacker Josh Perry. Here are our five favorite moments from the pilot episode.1.) Josh Perry describes his Ronda Rousey-based beef with Cardale Jones:Cardale may have the shirt, but Perry has the photo. We expect this to be a recurring storyline.2.) Braxton Miller gets burgers and hot dogs, while Cardale Jones gets the first class meal:Lesson learned: even former Big Ten Players of the Year have to eat the worse meal if they oversleep before a workout.3.) Big brothers are chosen for Ohio State freshmen:Very cool, and funny look inside the process.4.) Cornerbacks coach Kerry Coombs trash talks h-back Jalin Marshall:Every year when HBO does Hard Knocks, one of the assistant coaches is a breakout star. For Scarlet & Gray Days, it looks like Coombs will be that guy.5.) Urban Meyer coaches up Braxton Miller at wide receiver:Is there a more intriguing skill position player in the country right now?Overall, very fun first episode from Big Ten Network. This will certainly help us get through these long last few weeks before football officially begins.last_img read more

One-hundred percent of the proceeds will go towards girls’ education on the ground in Pakistan and Afghanistan. Jolie’s Education Partnership for Children of Conflict will contribute the first $50,000 to this effort.“We are sure you have been shaken by the news that last week, 14-year old Malala Yousafzai was shot in the head by the Taliban as she left school in the Swat Valley in Pakistan,” said Angelina Jolie and Women in the World Foundation founder Tina Brown in a joint statement. “Her crime was promoting girls’ education in Pakistan and publishing a blog about life under the Taliban. She remains unconscious, and has been flown from Pakistan to the United Kingdom to receive specialist treatment.“As a response to Malala’s bravery, girls across Pakistan, Afghanistan and the world are standing up and saying, “I am Malala” – and this is our opportunity to show the same solidarity.”To join Angelina in donating to the cause, click here. No challenge ACC looks to continue mastery of Big Ten

Tonight marks the beginning of the 11th annual Big Ten/ACC Challenge, an early-season series of games pitting teams from two of college basketball’s best conferences against one other. In the first 10 years of the challenge, the ACC has dominated, going 10-0 and winning 62 of the 97 games.Penn State at VirginiaThe Big Ten/ACC challenge tips off tonight with two of the conferences’ weaker teams.Virginia, picked to finish 11th in the conference before the season started, has already lost to South Florida and Stanford this year.Similarly, but perhaps more embarrassingly, the Nittany Lions have two losses of their own early in the season: an 80-69 loss to UNC Wilmington and a 63-60 loss to Tulane.Neither team showcased in the challenge’s opening game will be a true testament to what each conference has to offer.Wake Forest at No. 6 PurduePurdue, last season’s Big Ten Tournament champion, returns four of five starters, including preseason All-Conference forward Robbie Hummel. The Demon Deacons, picked by the media in the preseason as the ACC’s sixth-best team, are led by sophomore forward Al-Farouq Aminu. After five games, Aminu is averaging 18.8 points and 11.2 rebounds.Last week Purdue beat No. 9 Tennessee, proving its Top 10 ranking is no joke. The veteran Boilermakers are one of the best teams in the country.Northwestern at North Carolina StateNorthwestern’s preseason was marred with devastating injuries. Two Wildcat seniors, Jeff Ryan and Kevin Coble, were out for the season with ACL injuries before the team even began the year.Despite its 5-0 record, NC State was picked before the season as the ACC’s worst team. It might struggle in this game, even with the injuries to the Wildcats. The record might be a bit misleading — the Wolfpack has knocked off Georgia State, Akron, Austin Peay, Auburn and New Orleans.No. 21 Maryland at IndianaAfter a disappointing showing in last week’s Maui Invitational, Maryland left Hawaii with more questions than answers. The Terrapins lost to Cincinnati in the semifinals before falling again the following night at the hands of Wisconsin.Greivis Vasquez, Maryland’s point guard and a member of the preseason All-ACC team, has been conspicuously ineffective so far this year, scoring only 11.2 points per game, fourth-best on the team.Indiana’s freshman guard Maurice Creek is averaging more than 16 points a game and will look to lead the Hoosiers to an upset. At 3-3, Indiana already has half as many wins as it reached last season.No. 2 Michigan State at No. 11 North CarolinaThe marquee matchup of the challenge is a rematch of last year’s national championship game. Although the Tar Heels bested the Spartans in April, Carolina has vastly different personnel this year. Michigan State’s roster is basically intact. The Spartans return defending Big Ten Player of the Year Kalin Lucas, who is averaging nearly 17 points per game. There’s no denying that Carolina is talented, but the Heels lack the experience of last year’s team that dominated Michigan State in the title game. The Spartans will be looking for revenge and are much more fit to challenge the Tar Heels this time around.Virginia Tech at IowaThe Iowa Hawkeyes are likely the worst the Big Ten has to offer and, quite frankly, might be one of the worst teams in the entire country. The Hawkeyes have already dropped four games this year: a 62-50 loss to Texas-San Antonio, a 52-50 loss to Duquesne, an 85-60 loss to Texas, and a 74-57 loss to Wichita State.Virginia Tech and preseason All-Conference guard Malcolm Delaney, who is averaging 21.8 points per game, shouldn’t find the task too difficult. The Hokies are off to a 4-1 start.No. 20 Illinois at No. 19 ClemsonPreseason All-ACC forward Trevor Booker leads Clemson in perhaps the most evenly matched contest of the challenge. Booker leads the Tigers in both scoring and rebounding. The Tigers fell to Michigan in the first round of the NCAA Tournament a year ago.Illinois returns three starters from last year’s team, which finished third in the conference, and has four players that average double-digit points. With many of the other games having a clear favorite, the winner of this game could determine which conference will come out on top.No. 22 Minnesota at MiamiWednesday’s game will be the first ever meeting between these two schools.Coach Tubby Smith has rejuvenated the Golden Gopher program and put it on the national radar, a place unfamiliar to Minnesota basketball. Led by senior guard Lawrence Westbrook, Minnesota has begun the season 4-2, including an 82-73 win over No. 12 Butler last week.Miami has put together a fast start of its own, winning seven straight to start the season. Boston College at No. 15 MichiganJust like Duke, Boston College has never lost a game as a part of the Big Ten/ACC Challenge. However, the Golden Eagles have stumbled out of the gates, losing two of their first six games, including a 12-point loss to Northern Iowa last week.Michigan’s Manny Harris nearly posted his second triple-double of the season in last week’s overtime victory over Creighton but finished one rebound short. He leads the Wolverines with 21.6 points, 9.6 rebounds and 5.0 assists per game.No. 7 Duke at WisconsinThe Badgers and senior guard Trevon Hughes are coming off a third-place finish in last week’s Maui Invitational. After losing to Gonzaga in the semifinals, Wisconsin beat Maryland, an ACC team, in the consolation game.Unfortunately for the Badgers, they will play a different class of ACC team Wednesday.Duke has never lost a game in the Big Ten/ACC Challenge, boasting a 10-0 record. Along with preseason All-American Kyle Singler, the Blue Devils have four players that average double-digit points.Florida State at No. 17 Ohio StateOhio State’s Evan Turner has recorded two triple-doubles through six games.Turner is averaging 19.8 points per game, but it is his rebounding numbers that garner the most attention. Through the Buckeyes’ first six games, the junior point guard is grabbing 12.8 rebounds a game, the third-highest average in the country.Florida State is led by sophomore forward Chris Singleton, who averages 11.3 points per game. The Seminoles like to get the ball inside, something that could give the Buckeyes trouble if center Dallas Lauderdale gets into foul trouble. read more

Is Ohio State football worthy of No 1 ranking

The normally resolute Urban Meyer paused, carefully considering the ramifications of the next few words to come out of his mouth. His Buckeyes had just dispatched their most hated rival, Michigan, 26-21 in Meyer’s first taste of The Game to complete an undefeated season. No ties, no losses, the Buckeyes record stood at 12-0, but now the coach, staff and players were forced to face what they had been putting off all year. Due to NCAA sanctions dating back to infractions committed under former coach Jim Tressel’s tenure, there would be no postseason for Meyer’s Buckeyes. No conference championship game – the Big Ten Leaders Division would send a 7-5 Wisconsin team in OSU’s place – no BCS bowl bid and certainly no national championship game. The question that had been asked all year could no longer be sidestepped with “We’re just focusing on the next game,” or “We’ll worry about that at the end of the year.” No, the time had finally come for an answer, and even then Meyer didn’t seem completely sure how to phrase his response. If OSU is the last unbeaten team at the end of this season, should Ohio State be No. 1 in the Associated Press Poll? “Just trying to picture the headline here,” Meyer said after his long pause. “You know, I don’t know enough to – I think we’re at this point – like I said, the quote I’d like out there is I think this team could play and compete with any team in the United States of America as of now. I didn’t say that several weeks ago because we couldn’t. I understand, but I’m not going to get into the what if’s and can’t control what you can’t control.” What Meyer can’t control is the perception of his team and the conference it plays in, and right now that perception is that the Buckeyes had a relatively easy road to an unblemished record – especially with no bowl game to use as a final measuring stick. The Buckeyes are ranked No. 4 in the latest edition of the AP poll, which is a collection of 60 sportswriters from across the country that rate what they believe are the best 25 teams in America. Ranked ahead of the Buckeyes are, in order, Notre Dame, Alabama and Georgia. Out of that group, only Notre Dame is undefeated and Alabama and Georgia each have one loss. Seventeen voters ranked OSU as the No. 2 team in the country, and 24 voters ranked the Buckeyes fifth or worst, with the lowest ranking being No. 12. Pete DiPrimio, an AP voter who covers college football for the Fort Wayne News-Sentinel in Fort Wayne, Ind., ranked the Buckeyes No. 11 in his poll, the second lowest of any voter. “They had a fairly weak non-conference schedule and the Big Ten this season is, maybe, historically weak,” DiPrimio told The Lantern. “Now, if there is a playoff, life is different, but there’s not … Through no fault of their own they haven’t beaten any top-10 caliber team, not even close.” OSU’s players, who were muzzled from talking about the issue throughout the season, weren’t as hesitant as their coach to express where they think the team fits into the national picture. “Yeah I think we should be No. 1,” said junior running back Carlos Hyde. “I feel like we’re the best team in the nation, so yeah, I feel like we should be No. 1 at the end of the season.” Hyde wasn’t alone in his opinion. Redshirt senior receiver Jake Stoneburner, redshirt senior linebacker Etienne Sabino and junior receiver Corey Brown also said they believed OSU should be at least considered for the No. 1 ranking if they are the only undefeated team at the end of the season. More players probably share that opinion as only about a dozen players were made available to speak to the media after the game. But no matter how the rest of the season pans out, the Buckeyes’ chances at being crowned national champions are slim, maybe impossible. “I just don’t think it’s going to happen,” said Joe Walljasper, the sports editor of the Columbia Daily Tribune in Columbia, Mo., who ranked OSU No. 6 in his rankings. “I think there’s too many teams between them and not enough of the right teams could possibly lose.” Clearly, the players on OSU’s team believe their resume is better than the AP voters think it is. The Buckeyes beat two teams currently ranked in the top 25 this season in No. 14 Nebraska and No. 21 Michigan compared to Georgia, which has beaten one (No. 4 Florida), and Alabama, who’s beaten two (No. 6 LSU and No. 21 Michigan). Notre Dame has beaten three (No. 8 Stanford, No. 12 Oklahoma and No. 21 Michigan). Not playing a team ranked in the top-10 in or out of conference is something holding some voters back. “It’s not like (OSU is) playing in the WAC or something,” Walljasper said. “Normally between Michigan, Wisconsin, Nebraska you’d have a top-10 team in there and you just don’t this year.” OSU beat seven bowl-eligible teams (including 8-win Penn State) compared to Notre Dame’s nine, Alabama’s five and Georgia’s four. Georgia and Alabama play next Saturday in the SEC Championship with the winner presumably going to play Notre Dame in the BCS Championship Game. Many fans have taken issue with Georgia being ranked ahead of the Buckeyes because the Bulldogs suffered a 28-point loss to South Carolina. “They played an SEC schedule,” DiPrimio said of his reasoning. “An average SEC team this year is stronger than most of the Big Ten. I think Georgia gets credit for its SEC schedule.” Walljasper said OSU would probably lose “two or three games” in the SEC. Though the players believe otherwise, they’re satisfied with their accomplishments. “Hey, we’re 12-0. That’s all I can say,” Sabino said. “People can talk what they want. (There are) a whole bunch of what-if’s now. I know we took care of what we had to do. We set out to win every single game this year and that’s what we did. It wasn’t pretty but it happened. We’re happy.” read more

Rajinikanth backs Narendra Modi as PM BJP will secure 300 seats on

first_imgNarendra Modi and Rajinikanth.PR HandoutRajinikanth has made a u-turn on his political stand ás he has extended his support to the BJP in the forthcoming Lok Sabha elections. The Tamil superstar has predicted that the saffron party will register a thumping win in the polls and Narendra Modi would be the Prime Minister of India once again.Explaining the stand behind changing his stand and endoring Narendra Modi, Rajinikanth said, “I thought of staying away from politics as I could not give necessary attention to build my party. I had this belief that it could be a cakewalk for Modi at the centre. But looking at the way opposition parties are vying for his blood, I feel the need to put my weight behind an honest man who is toiling hard to put a great picture of country in the world map,” the Tamil superstar said.Is he supporting him out of fear that Modi might fail to become the PM again? “No, I am cent percent sure that the BJP will secure 300+ seats on its own. The reason why I am endorsing him is because there are lots of lies that are being spread about him. I believe a lie told 100 times might seem like the truth to the people. Hence, I decided to support him,” he said.”I am among the millions of Narendra Modi fans who want him to be the Prime Minister again. I may not be very comfortable with BJP’s ideology and endorse everything that do, but surely I back him for the India’s political post. His policies might have failed to yeild desired results and some could be called failures, yet nobody can question his sincerity and courage to take bold steps,” Rajinikanth claims.Interestingly, Rajinikanth seems to be not happy with the AIADMK and his liking has shifted towards the DMK leadership. “At present, I feel MK Stalin is the best leader among the lot in Tamil Nadu. I see a future for him in the state politics.” It has to be noted that the Dravidian party is having alliance with the Congress in the forthcoming Lok Sabha election and has been critical about Modi’s policies. However, Rajinikanth is prepping up for the Tamil Nadu assembly election in 2021. “By then, we would be in a position to contest in all the constituencies in the state. The BJP’s position in the state is negligible and there is a vaccum in politics after the demise of two stalwarts like J Jayalalithaa and M Karunanidhi.Rajini’s desire to foray into politics got new lease of life after J Jayalalithaa’s death. Months after she passed away, Rajini indicated that he was ready for the politics. To everybody’s surprise, he released a press release recently stating that his party Rajini Makkal Mandram was not endorsing any party and requested his party men not to identify with other parties.Did you believe this news?Happy April Fools’ Day. This story means no harm and is only meant to be a good-natured April Fools’ prank. We hope you had a laugh and here’s wishing you a wonderful day.last_img read more

Why is PM Modi attending the G7 summit despite India not being

first_imgBritish Prime Minister Boris Johnson with Indian counterpart Narendra Modi met at the sideline of the G-7 summit in Biarritz, France.TwitterPrime Minister Narendra Modi will attend the two-day G7 Summit in France’s Biarritz, starting Monday, August 26, on a special invitation by French President Emmanuel Macron. PM Modi will be participating in two sessions – Climate, biodiversity and oceans and another on Digital Transformation. He will also be holding several bilateral meetings with other leaders on the sidelines. The Ministry of External Affairs hailed the special invitation as “reflection of the personal chemistry” between the two countries and “recognition of India as a major economic power”.The G7 countries include the seven largest International Monetary Fund (IMF)-described advanced economies in the world: Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the United States and the United Kingdom. However, India’s participation in the global summit will strengthen its goal of conducting sideline talks on trade and bilateral issues. It will also enhance international support from other countries for the ongoing Indo-Pak tensions related to the Indian government’s decision to abrogate the special status of Jammu and Kashmir under Article 370 of the constitution. The PM met UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on the sidelines of the G7 summit on Sunday and held “fruitful discussions” on the Kashmir issue. The UN chief expressed concerns over the issue and called for “maximum restraint”. He also welcomed India’s participation in the UN’s Climate Action Summit and other issues of mutual interest.Modi congratulated British PM Boris Johnson and held a 30-minute sideline meeting where he discussed strengthening India-UK bilateral cooperation in trade and economic relations. He also discussed the recent violent attacks by a mob outside the Indian High Commission in London. The British PM regretted the incident and assured the safety of the Indian mission. Johnson also said that Kashmir is a bilateral issue between India and Pakistan.Earlier, US President Donald Trump, while repeatedly offering to mediate between India and Pakistan, had said that he will discuss the “explosive” situation in Kashmir in order to ease tensions between the neighbouring countries at the G7 summit. He added that the US-India trade issues, such as the easing tariff on US products and strategic partnership, are also likely to be discussed.   The US Official brief on President’s Trump’s agenda ahead of the summit said, “President Trump is very much looking forward to his meeting with Indian Prime Minister Modi, where they will discuss the strategic partnership and how they can cooperate more closely on issues like defence cooperation, counterterrorism, and trade.”The brief added that the US believes Kashmir is a bilateral issue and India’s move regarding 370 is an internal matter with regional implications that needs to de-escalate.The US President, last week, urged India to exercise utmost restraint and called Pakistan to stop cross-border terrorist infiltration into the Kashmir valley.Prime Minister Modi will hold bilateral meetings with Chile and Senegal during the G7 summit. The two countries were also given special invitations. The Indian Prime Minister is also expected to meet his French counterpart Edouard Philippe and interact with the Indian community.last_img read more

Augmented Reality Science Fiction or Reality w Video

first_img(PhysOrg.com) — Computer graphics have come a long way since the birth of Atari Games over 30 years ago. Today, computer graphics seem very real and some day researchers will pull graphics out of your television or computer display and integrate them into real-world environments. By using Nvidia’s new Tegra platform, the game’s maps are generated by pointing the phones camera at a 2D drawing printout lying on a table. The end result shows a realistic 3D world with buildings popping up, as players move the real world around the game map placed on the table. Motion controlled devices for Nintendo Wii and Microsoft’s new Natal platform are already being used to enhance gamers experience. By using the Natal platform, as the control mechanism, body movements can easily be converted into game movements. The ultimate goal would be to merge game graphics with the real world. The day will come when video games are played outdoors and project into the real world around us. In the future augmented reality will have a more profound effect on the way in which we develop and interact with computers.Via: PCAuthority© 2009 PhysOrg.com This document is subject to copyright. What Comes After Hard Drives

What Comes After Hard Drives

Researchers predict that, in 2020, hard disk drives will likely be less expensive on a cost per terabyte basis than any of the competing technologies. Image credit: Christian Jansky. (PhysOrg.com) — The ability to store and retrieve data is an important component of today’s computers, as well as other modern electronic devices such as cell phones, video game consoles, and camcorders. Since their invention in the 1950s, magnetic-based hard disk drives (HDDs) have been the primary method of nonvolatile storage. However, researchers are currently developing several new and promising nonvolatile memory (NVM) technologies, but for one of them to replace HDDs within the next decade, it will be a challenge. According to a new study, if HDDs continue to progress at their current pace, then in 2020 a two-disk, 2.5-inch disk drive will be capable of storing more than 14 TB and will cost about $40 (today, a typical 500 GB hard drive costs about $100). Although flash memories have also become popular – with advantages such as lower power consumption, faster read access time, and better mechanical reliability than HDDs – the cost per GB for flash memories is nearly 10 times that of HDDs. In addition, flash memory technology will reach technical limits that will prevent its continued scaling before 2020, keeping them from replacing HDDs.In a study published in a recent issue of IEEE Transactions on Magnetics, Professor Mark Kryder and PhD student Chang Soo Kim of Carnegie Mellon University have investigated 13 up-and-coming NVM technologies to see whether one of them might outperform HDDs on a cost-per-TB basis in 2020. Their results showed that most technologies will probably not be competitive with HDDs or flash memories at that time, except for two potential candidates: phase change random access memory (PCRAM) and spin transfer torque random access memory (STTRAM).As Kryder and Kim explained, PCRAM is based on the phase change properties of chalcogenide glass. With the application of heat, the glass can switch between two different states (amorphous and crystalline) to be used as a memory. With their small cell size and ability to store multiple bits per cell, PCRAMs have the potential to offer high densities and be cost-competitive with HDDs, but their biggest drawback is that they require somewhat higher power than most other technologies. PCRAMs are already beginning to be marketed by Numonyx Inc., an Intel-ST Microelectronics joint venture, and so are closer to practical realization than STTRAM.STTRAM, which is similar to magnetic RAM, uses a spin polarized current to write data by reorienting the states of a magnetic tunnel junction between parallel and anti-parallel orientations. In their evaluation, Kryder and Kim found that STTRAMs appear to potentially offer superior power efficiency, among other advantages. If STTRAMs could be improved to store multiple bits per cell, the researchers predict that STTRAMs’ density could make them candidates for replacing flash memory and possibly HDDs. This is not necessarily the wisest decision, but is quite understandable.”The other NVM technologies that Kryder and Kim evaluated were ferroelectric RAM, magnetic RAM, carbon nanotube RAM, probe memory, holographic memory, copper bridge RAM, resistive RAM, racetrack memory, single electron memory, molecular memory, and polymer memory. Although these technologies offer potential, each of them still faces significant performance challenges over the next decade. Holographic memory, for example, offers high density and is inexpensive, but it currently only offers “write once, read many times” (WORM) functionality, and with its 50-year storage lifetime it may be better suited to the archival market. The researchers also pointed out the intriguing concept behind single electron memory, where information could be stored in something as small as a single electron, but they predicted that this technology likely won’t be practical until beyond 2020.Kryder, who has previously been CTO for Seagate Technology, the world’s largest hard drive maker, explained that he had been continually asked to review new technologies that were often touted as potentially replacing hard drives. “Feedback from industrial associates has indicated that having a structured set of criteria to evaluate technologies was very useful and that the study has helped them to prioritize the technologies that they look at,” he said. “This study allowed us to identify the most promising technologies on which to work, and we are now attempting develop multi-level cell STTRAM.”More information: Mark H. Settop box and wireless networking specialist Air

first_imgSet-top box and wireless networking specialist AirTies has launched a new portable wireless set-top box (STB), designed to be small enough to fit into a handbag. The Air 7205 miniature STB measures 10 by 10 centimetres and is one of a number of products that the firm is demoing at the TV Connect event in London this week.Airties said the 7205 attaches wirelessly to the IP gateway, features remote control and home automation capabilities and can easily be moved from room to room.“The STB wirelessly connects to the home gateway and works on any unmanaged internet connection, effectively unbundling the provision of the pay TV service from the broadband service offering and opening up new revenue-stream opportunities,” said the firm.AirTies is also launching a new family of HEVC/4K set-top boxes, designed to offer satellite-quality live and on-demand video to any subscriber with a broadband connection. The Air 7410 line of set-tops consist of an OTT/IPTV STB and a hybrid DVB-T/OTT version that is available to trial quantities. All versions will include an HEVC decoder, 4K TV display, USB 3.0 and will use the latest Broadcom 7251 System-on-a-chip. The boxes will be on display for the first time at TV Connect. In addition, AirTies is using the event to launch two new versions of its next generation wireless video access points, targeted at both broadband and pay TV operators. The AirTies Air 4820 and Air 4920 feature the latest 802.11ac wireless chipsets and are designed to “simultaneously solve two of the most critical issues facing operators today: the cost of installing a pay TV service and the problem of consumers not getting the internet speeds they are paying for when connecting multiple devices in different rooms or on different floors,” said AirTies.last_img read more
