Burch, Steels Claim Women’s Indoor Track & Field Athlete of the Week Awards

Austin’s Cayla Burch and Northwestern State’s Jasmyn Steels are the Southland Conference Women’s Track & Field Athletes of the Week, the league announced Wednesday. All Southland Athletes of the Week are presented by MidSouth Bank.Burch competed across a pair of events for the Ladyjacks at the Charlie Thomas Invitational in College Station, Texas. The freshman’s best performance came with a second-place finish during the 400-meter event. NSU’s Steels collected a first-place performance in the long jump for the Lady Demons at the LSU Bayou Bengal Invitational.Women’s Indoor Track Athlete of the Week – Cayla Burch, Stephen F. Austin – Fr. – Minneapolis, Minn.The freshman ran the 400-meter race for the first time this season, clocking a Southland season-best time of 54.61. The performance also placed her 54th nationally in the quarter-mile event. Additionally, Burch ran a leg of the 4×400 relay team which clocked in at a 3:49.13 pace. The mile-relay squad’s finish stands as the third best mark in the Southland this season.Honorable Mention: Alejandra Ruiz, Central Arkansas; Soren Underwood, Abilene Christian; Aleyah Donald, McNeese.Women’s Indoor Field Athlete of the Week – Jasmyn Steels, Northwestern State – Jr. – College Station, TexasThe College Station product took first overall after covering a distance of 20’7 ¼” in the long jump event. Her performance at the LSU Bayou Bengal Invitational currently stands as the ninth best jump in the nation and the second-best mark in Northwestern State program history.Honorable Mention: Nastassja Campbell, Stephen F. Austin; Tristyn Allen, Sam Houston State; Lonnie Smith, Abilene Christian; Malaiya Jedkins, McNeese.Southland weekly award winners are nominated and voted upon by each school’s sports information director.
